An Illinois husband is in mourning after his wife was killed on Mother’s Day in a car accident after she attended church without him for the first time in 36 years.
Annette Odneal, 62, had just left Abounding Life Church of God in Christ after attending a service when she was struck by a speeding car and killed. According to police, a 17-year-old boy was driving a speeding Dodge Charger – which he had allegedly stolen – when it collided with Odneal’s car, killing her.
According to Posen Mayor Frank Podbielniak, at about 12:30 p.m. on Mozart Avenue and 147th Street, a hijacked Dodge Charger collided with Odneal’s car, killing her instantly.
She was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn as paramedics tried to resuscitate her, Podbielniak stated. She was pronounced dead at 1:33 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
“It was a traumatic accident,” Podbielniak said. “The impact was so grave — just horrible.”
Two passengers pulled the teen driver of the Charger away from the immobilized vehicle. Podbielniak shared that he was admitted to the University of Chicago Medical Center and underwent surgery for a broken femur. When the teen is released from the hospital, he will be taken into custody.
The Abounding Life Church of God in Christ did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The christian Post on Wednesday, but a woman identifying herself as Annette Odneal’s daughter-in-law told the outlet that the loss is “tremendous” for the family.
In an earlier interview, Cierra Odneal, Annette’s daughter, told WGN that “She didn’t deserve what happened to her. She was on her way to my house. I just saw her on Saturday, and I never thought it would be the last time seeing my mom.”
Anthony Odneal, Annette’s son, pleaded for justice in the situation, saying, “If it were your mother, you’d want the same. Y’all took her from us on Mother’s Day. Every day, that’s just who she was.”
The son adds that his mother was rich in faith, often sending text messages with a short prayer, an ‘I love you,’ and ‘have a good day.’ Every day, that’s just who she was.”
On Tuesday, a vigil to honor her life was held at Abounding Life Church of God in Christ.
