President Biden Hopes to Have 70 Percent of American Adults Vaccinated by July 4

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he hopes to have 70 percent of American adults receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by July 4.
“I’d like to get it 100 percent, but I think realistically we can get to [70 percent] between now and July Fourth,” Biden said of his new goal.
According to the Associated Press, demand for vaccines has begun to noticeably decline around the U.S. With 56 percent of American adults receiving at least one shot and nearly 105 million being fully vaccinated, the number of people “eager to get vaccinated” is beginning to dwindle, slowing the rate of vaccinations. Still, the Associated Press reports that the U.S. is “currently administering first doses at a rate of about 965,000 per day.” This is reportedly a 50 percent drop from the vaccination rate three weeks ago. Some states have even left more than half of the doses available to them unordered.
As such, Biden shared that his administration will be shifting its efforts from reaching herd immunity to making the vaccines readily available in areas with high demand for the shots.
As the administration shifts its vaccine focus, Biden noted that there are three areas of focus in his “new phase” of vaccination administration.
The three areas include opening up vaccines to “kids, children between the ages of 12 and 15 years of age,” “making it more convenient for everyone to get a vaccine” and focusing on “Americans who still aren’t sure they want to get vaccinated.”
On Tuesday, Biden took steps to expand vaccine access by asking states to make the vaccines available to walk-ins. He is expected to ask the same of pharmacies administering the shots.
“You do need to get vaccinated,” Biden said in a statement. “Even if your chance of getting seriously ill is low, why take the risk? It could save your life or the lives (sic) of somebody you love.”
