Israel Will Not Rely on Deal to Keep Iran from Getting Nuclear Weapons, Netanyahu Says

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country is not relying on a nuclear deal with Iran.
“Israel isn’t pinning its hopes on an agreement with an extremist regime like [Iran]. We already saw what these agreements are worth… with North Korea,” Netanyahu said at a memorial service for the 1920 Battle of Tel Hai, the Jerusalem Post reports.
The prime minister’s comments come after President Joe Biden proposed reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear agreement.
Former President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the agreement in 2018.
Netanyahu says he does not trust Iran to honor an agreement.
“With or without an agreement,” he said, “we will do everything so (Iran isn’t) armed with nuclear weapons.”
This week, Jews will celebrate Purim, or the Feast of Lots, which marks when Jews were saved from Haman, an ancient Persian empire official who wanted to kill all Jews. Queen Esther, a Jew herself, convinces her husband, King Ahasuerus, to spare the people.
“2,500 years ago, a Persian oppressor tried to destroy the Jewish people, and just as he failed then, you will fail today,” Netanyahu said, addressing his comments to Iran’s leaders.
“We didn’t make a journey of thousands of years to return to the land of Israel in order to allow the delusional Ayatollah’s regime to finish the story of the rebirth of the Jewish people.”
Ambassador to the U.S. Gilad Erdan said if the U.S. returns to the JCPOA and lifts sanctions against Iran, “the question is whether there will be an agreement that blocks any way Iran can get a nuclear weapon.”
In a meeting this week with Israeli officials, Erdan said leaders were hoping for a “diplomatic solution” rather than a “military solution.”
According to Newsweek, Israeli forces have previously attacked nuclear sites in Syria, Iraq and Iran. Some have also suspected that Israeli operatives may have also assassinated key Iranian nuclear scientists.
