How Our Children Can Restore Our Capacity for Wonder

Written by on September 1, 2020

Jesus said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 18:3

Children can see and accept things that, as jaded adults, we may find more challenging. I think children can help us accept the glories of creation. Sometimes, I find that amazing natural scenes I see with my own eyes don’t make much impression on me, and I believe this is because I have seen it all before on television. Television, the internet, photography, etc., can rob us of our capacity for wonder. But children can put it back.

I have recently made a film with Vineyard Church pastor Tri Robinson called “Cowboy and Preacher.” This film explores Christianity and Environmentalism. I have often been baffled why Christians resist the call to care for the environment, which is one of God’s greatest gifts to us. I think much of the reason for this is political, but ultimately both Christianity and the environment should rise above politics. In the film, Tri gives seven Bible studies that lay out seven reasons drawn from scripture why we should care about the environment.

One thing that comes through very strongly in the film is the relationship between Tri and his children and grandchildren, and how these younger people help him frame his views on why we must protect the environment. His children made him realize that it was contradictory to be pro-life but anti-environment, as the environment is a pro-life issue. There’s no point valuing human life if there is no environment within which people can live.
