One of Israel’s most secure prisoners, in the Shatah prison, has contracted the coronavirus, Ynet reported on Tuesday. It is unclear when or how the prisoner contracted the virus.

It came as a surprise to the prisoner security services that a “well known” criminal, locked in his cell for 23 hours a day, along with only 15 others in the same prisoner conditions could contract the virus. The prisoners in that prison wing can only meet visitors with a glass screen divider, thus negating the possibility that the prisoner contracted the virus from outside the prison.

Even though two weeks ago the prisoners were tested for the coronavirus, every one of them had a negative test result. However, upon hearing that one of the prisoners had contracted the virus, other prisoners became worried and complained of muscle and throat pains.

There is a “gloomy atmosphere” in the prison, prisoners are concerned that they could be exposed, according to Ynet. The prisoners have complained in the past that the guards would constantly come in and out of the prison without getting tested for coronavirus.

The prison services responded in a statement that they are doing everything within their power to contain the virus and to prevent others from being infected.
