A christian crowdfunding site has raised more than $15,000 to create a trust account for the son of a police officer who was killed in Maryland.

The fundraiser on GiveSendGo launched after Cpl. Keith Heacook of the Delmar Police Department in Maryland died after responding to an early morning call of a fight in progress.

Police said Heacook was “ambushed by a career criminal” on April 25 and had responded alone to the known drug house.

Heacook died in a hospital three days after the fight.

According to a report, Heacook was attacked by Randon D. Wilkerson at the house about 5 a.m. on April 25. A witness said Wilkerson stomped his foot repeatedly on Heacook’s head after he knocked him unconscious. He also reportedly attacked an elderly couple who lived across the street.

Wilkerson is being charged with attempted murder, burglary, assault, possession of a deadly weapon while committing a felony and terroristic.

Heacook’s son, Matthew, is 12.

The fundraiser is hoping to raise $25,000 for Matthew.

A cofounder with GiveSendGo, Heather Wilson, told The christian Post that she knows most Americans are “hearing lots of negative things about police officers.” Still, she says supporting the good officers is important.

“So obviously, there’s good and bad, but we believe probably most police officers are good people wanting to do good things,” she said.

Wilson said she has also heard that many people living in Delmar are upset the officer’s death hasn’t drawn more attention. She also said she was disappointed that President Joe Biden, who is from Delaware, has not commented on the police officer’s death.

“If it had been the other way around, where he went and ended up defending himself and shooting the guy, it probably would have brought the mob down here.”

“They’re really upset that this isn’t getting more media coverage,” she said.
