Disney Plus Adds its First R-Rated Movies: Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and Logan

Families who signed up for Disney Plus in 2019 solely for the children’s content may want to bush up on those parental controls.

Disney announced Thursday that it was adding its first R-rated titles to the Disney Plus platform with Deadpool (2016), Deadpool 2 (2018) and Logan (2017). The Deadpool franchise follows the foul-mouthed anti-hero (a.k.a. Wade Wilson) who is out for revenge, while Logan follows the exploits of the X-Men character better known as Wolverine.

Disney Plus launched in 2019 as a popular family-centric service thanks to a library filled with Star Wars, Pixar and Marvel titles.

But that family-centric future became murky when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the Deadpool series and Logan. Both films include Marvel characters.

A Disney Plus news release on Thursday acknowledged the dramatic change in its previous content and its new R-rated titles.

“With the addition of these new titles, subscribers are invited to revisit their parental controls settings to ensure a viewing experience most suitable for them and their family,” the news release said.

With parental control, Disney Plus users can prevent the display and access to R-rated movies. Users also can set up a pin to prevent children from accessing an adult profile. Disney Plus, though, does not allow users to block specific titles within a rating classification – something that its rival, Netflix, does allow.

Although Disney Plus had not previously placed R-rated movies on its platform, it had added content rated TV-MA, including TV series Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Both series would potentially be rated R if they ventured into theaters.

Deadpool is rated R for “strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity” and Deadpool 2 for “strong violence and language throughout, sexual references and brief drug material.” Logan is rated R for “strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity.”
